Chocolate Cake - the Devil’s Food!
Who can resist the temptation of a mouthwatering piece of cake, especially when it is chocolate? Although cake has been around since ancient civilization it has evolved much since then. From a concoction including honey, fruit and nuts, it was actually more of a bread. It wasn’t until the mid 19th century that cake began to resemble what we enjoy in today’s world. Thankfully, during the 17th century, a creative baker (most likely an early chocoholic) had the idea to add chocolate to the cake batter. Since then chocolate cake has become the most popular type of cake and is eaten in most parts of the world.
Popular Chocolate Cakes - the Classics
Devils Food Cake is a moist and rich, yet light textured chocolate layer cake, appropriately, quite the opposite of Angel Food Cake. Devils Food cake is also know as Red Velvet Cake which originated in the southern states and was made with cocoa and beets which gave it its unique dark red colouring. Some people believe it was called devils food because it was so tempting.
Did you know that German Chocolate Cake is not a German food. One of the most popular chocolate cakes, the recipe was actually developed in 1957 in the United States by a Dallas, Texas housewife. The name came from one of the ingredients - the sweet chocolate baking bar developed for Bakers Chocolate in 1852 by Sam German.
